Corporación Deportiva América, commonly known as América de Cali, is a Colombian football team, based in Cali. The club was founded in 1927. América is widely recognized as one of the most notable and traditional clubs in Colombian soccer history, being the club to have won the second largest number of Fútbol Profesional Colombiano titles (The Colombian First Division). It is considered to be one of the South American soccer powerhouses, because of its international appearances and its worldwide famous players. America is also known as "La Mechita," literally meaning in English "The Fuse" like that of bottle-rocket firework; when the team plays well the fans say "se prendio la mechita", which means "the fuse has ignited". America is recognized as having produced Colombia's top players and they are constantly being exported to leagues across the world. Most of the famous Colombian players that now triumph across the world of soccer and the Colombian national team, were made famous while playing for this institution. However, the past few years have shown a deterioration of the talent that once ranked it among the world's best. The team's roots trace all the way back to 1918, when some students from Colegio Santa Librada formed their own team, called "America F.C.", to compete with other schools. The team won the Copa Centenario Batalla de Boyacá in 1919. The team's uniform was light blue with white vertical stripes, light blue shorts, and socks with horizontal stripes in white and light blue. América de Cali was founded on February 13, 1927 in some of the poorest neighborhoods of Cali, then an economically emerging city in Colombia. After being expelled inexplicably from the regional tournament, América decides to tour the country in order to continue playing the sport, thus becoming the first Colombian team to play around the country. On February 16, 1948, América officially becomes the first professional Colombian soccer team, and had a large part in creating the first Colombian professional soccer tournament that took place that year.

He started and ended his club career in Cúcuta Deportivo, though he spent 12 years at Millonarios, where he is still considered one of the finest players in the club's history. Iguarán is also considered one of the best players ever in the Colombia national football team, where he is considered as one of top goalscorers , having netted 25 goals. One of the most memorable victories he had while playing at the Colombian team was in the Copa América 1991, where they defeated Brasil with a score of 2-0, the first goal was scored by Antony De Ávila, and the second one was scored by the "Guájaro" Iguarán himself, at the 66th minute of the match. After his retirement in the 1990s, a football academy was founded in his honor by his brother Camilo Iguarán. Antony William de Ávila Charry (born December 21, 1963 in Santa Marta, Colombia) is a former Colombian soccer striker. Nicknamed El Pitufo ("The Smurf") or El Pipa, he was known as much for his short height of 160 cm (5 ft 3 in) as for his goal-scoring prowess. De Ávila spent his career with three clubs: América de Cali in his native Colombia, the MetroStars of Major League Soccer, and Barcelona SC of Ecuador. His 25 goals for América in 1990 led Colombia. He is the top scorer in the history of América de Cali, with 201 goals, making him one of the fans' idols. De Ávila scored 29 goals during his career in Copa Libertadores making him the 6th highest scoring player in the history of the tournament. De Ávila also scored 13 (in 53 appearances) for the Colombia national team. He played for his country in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups. De Ávila's MLS career spanned a season and a half, as he joined the Metros midway through the 1996 season as a replacement for colossal disappointment Rubén Darío Hernández. With the club playing on AstroTurf for parts of the season, El Pitufo was surprisingly adept at what was called "ping-pong soccer".[1] He scored 15 goals and added 11 assists in his time in the league, plus another two goals and an assist in the playoffs.

However, the past few years have shown a deterioration of the talent that once ranked it among the world's best. The devil first appeared on the crest in 1940 because of the popular belief that the players "played like devils" on the field. During Gabriel Ochoa Uribe's twelve years with the institution, the devil was always an inconvenience for him so it was removed due to religious reasons. For this reason, the crest only carried the number of stars or titles obtained by the club. In 1992, the devil was completely removed and was only used for the administrative aspects of the institution. As a celebration of the club's 70 years, the devil was put back on the uniforms. From this date forward, any malignant beliefs regarding the devil have been completely removed. In 2007, in order to conmemorate the club's 80 years of existence, the devil was temporarily replaced with a logo that reads "80 años" (80 years) and underneath "1927-2007"; above the crest are the 12 stars obtained by the club.
